The Woman King, written by Dana Stevens, is set in Dahomey (located in present-day Benin) during the 1820s. Although Prince-Bythewood stages plenty of sensational fight scenes, she’s equally interested in grappling with the subtler political conflicts at work. The Woman King tackles a far more intricate story. The Old Guard has terrific action, but it’s intentionally pulpy. Since then, she’s made the somber period piece The Secret Life of Bees, the glitzy but tender superstar romance Beyond the Lights, and 2020’s comic-book adaptation The Old Guard, which was enough of a hit for Netflix to green-light a sequel.

War movies, especially the Technicolor epics of old, tend to be thrilling affairs, in which stars triumph in the crucible of battle. War itself is miserable, complex, and sometimes lacking in heroic purpose. My little nephew loved it, but me and my mum agree it's not the best children's film.The excitement of a historical war film is frequently at odds with the subject. The reason why I've given this 4 stars instead of 5, is because it didn't "wow" me. I'm glad I didn't waste my money/time going to the cinema to see this as I don't think it would've been viewed any better there than it did watching it at home.
There are some lines/descriptions made by a couple of animals that are a little much (adult themed), but considering how these lines are actually worded, I doubt the children would understand the actual meaning so I wouldn't worry too much. Some of the comedy/violence is way over the top but I'm guessing that was added for the kids as comedy violence seems to be a popular thing.
There's plenty of laughs and there are the added "adult" jokes (that the younger ones won't get). This story follows the lives of a group of pets and the adventures they have when their owners go out to work (so it's basically the pet version of Toy Story!) The main dog, Max, gets an extra family member when his owner brings home a monster of a dog, and the film follows their adventure of adjustment.
